One event tonight kicks off two others. It's at the Given Institute in Aspen and features one of the town's foremost athletes. A panel led by World Cup snowboarder Chris Klug opens the Given Institute's Winter Lecture Series and the Summit for Life Weekend. KDNK's Marilyn Gleason spoke with Chris Klug about the liver transplant that saved his life two years before his Olympic medal at Salt Lake City.
Some of the biggest names in cycling are behind efforts to bring the country's first international stage race back to Colorado. The Coors Classic ended in 1988 after more than a decade, and launching the careers of some of the countries greatest riders. The Governor, an enthusiastic bike rider himself, says he'll do his part make the race happen, but in tight economic times, financial backing from the state is unlikely. KDNK's Bente Birkeland reports.
For the first time a new study shows the costs of search and rescue operations in national parks. Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park has some of the highest rates of incidents. KDNK's Conrad Wilson has the story.
Despite the fact that this has not been an unusually high water year, so far in 2009 there has been an unusual amount of river accidents and fatalities. River rafters have drowned in the Dolores River, the rapids in Westwater Canyon and Cataract Canyon, and the family friendly Black Rocks area on the Colorado River. And it's not just rafters getting in trouble. The Garfield County Search and rescue recently responded to a call from eyewitnesses who spotted a man struggling in the Colorado River near Silt. So far, crews have not found him. KDNK's Stacy Stein was on a recent river trip where she witnessed rescue efforts to save Timmy Rau (Rhymes with Wow), who drowned after his boat flipped in Westwater Canyon. She filed this report.
Since his recent death, Robert McNamara's legacy is a topic of debate because of his role in the Viet Nam War as Secretary of Defense under presidents Kennedy and Johnson. But in Aspen and Colorado, he leaves a different legacy, one sure to enrich the lives of hikers, bikers and backcountry skiers into the forseeable future.
