
Rifle elk season opened Saturday in Colorado. Last year, 190,000 hunters applied for limited elk licenses and over 43,000 animals were harvested. But changes are pressuring herds throughout the Colorado and Roaring Fork River Valleys, as well as the culture of hunting itself. The Meeker Sheepdog Classic is underway about 75 miles northwest of Carbondale. Like the Rocky Mountains, the terrain and the sheep are rough and rugged at the Meeker Classic, and that has earned it notoriety. KDNK’s Marilyn Gleason watched preliminaries this week and learned about a new expression on the lips of sheepdog enthusiasts.
