Jam-Packed Local Newscast for Tuesday

On today's newscast, Bente Birkeland reports that a bipartisan effort to reduce the suspension rate of young children is working its way through the process. Eric Galatas reports on the transgender birth certificate's uncertain future in the Republican "kill committee" in the state senate. In this week's capitol conversation, journalists discuss the state budget gap. New reports point to Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch's history of voting against disabled students. Parents and children are delivering over 400,000 signatures in support of public broadcasting funds to the US Senate today. US Sen. Michael Bennet, who spoke at 5 town halls around southern and western Colorado last week, says to "keep it coming." Town of Carbondale has closed third street downtown until Memorial Day for streetscape improvements. The City of Glenwood's annual spring cleanup event kicks off April 17th. And prescribed burns are planned near Carbondale, Basalt, Parachute, Gypsum and Meeker.

  

Gavin became one of the youngest station managers in public radio on February 1, 2017. He is a writer and producer with a passion for community media. Prior to starting at KDNK as news director in 2016, Gavin worked for national radio programs Alternative Radio with David Barsamian and Nonprofit Radio with Tony Martignetti along with local stations KGNU Boulder, KYRS Spokane, KRBX Boise, KAOS Olympia, and Air America Radio affiliate KPTK Seattle. His nonprofit management experience includes Open Media Foundation, where he led a government transparency team, and Common Frequency, where his policy advocacy supported dozens of noncommercial radio startups. Boulder Weekly, Raw Story, Austin American-Statesman, Boise Weekly, and The Sopris Sun have published his reporting. His TV credits include directing teams at Colorado Channel, crewing for Democracy Now!, and hosting on Free Speech TV. He graduated from the Evergreen State College in 2008 with a BA in media production and community organizing.
