News: River deaths at a high this season

July 14, 2009
Despite the fact that this has not been an unusually high water year, so far in 2009 there has been an unusual amount of river accidents and fatalities. River rafters have drowned in the Dolores River, the rapids in Westwater Canyon and Cataract Canyon, and the family friendly Black Rocks area on the Colorado River. And it's not just rafters getting in trouble. The Garfield County Search and rescue recently responded to a call from eyewitnesses who spotted a man struggling in the Colorado River near Silt. So far, crews have not found him. KDNK's Stacy Stein was on a recent river trip where she witnessed rescue efforts to save Timmy Rau (Rhymes with Wow), who drowned after his boat flipped in Westwater Canyon. She filed this report.
