Niceness, a group that describes itself as “”positively grounded Rocky Mountain roots reggae” integrates elements of soul, funk, latin, and hip-hop. KDNK presented Niceness at The Temporary on July 13. Bonte Lane aka Pam Rosenthal is guiding a playful sound exploration workshop on July 17, 31, and August 14 at the Third Street Center at 7pm.

This band is sort of a bluegrass super-group from North Carolina. They visited B Sides on KDNK before their two Sunday gigs in Carbondale in Sopris Park and Steve's Guitars. They talked about their new release dropping next month and played some songs from that live in the studio.

There's no shortage of girl/boy duos in roots music. It might even be a genre. Mandolin Orange is one of the better ones. They wowed a full house at Steve's Guitars on February 17, 2016. Thanks to Steve Standiford and Grassroots TV for allowing us to broadcast the audio of live music from Steve's Guitars.

Hot on the heels of a new documentary about George Stranahan, here is an inspiring chat we had back in 2013 upon the publication of his book "The Predicament of Innocents." And then Miss Tess and the Talkbacks play three songs live in-studio before their gig at Steve's Guitars. They played a couple older tunes, Little Lola and Moonshiner sandwiched a new tune The Moon Is an Ashtray.

Four engaging Aussies talk about their new film, The Bikes of Wrath, which received its world premiere at the 5Point Film Festival. And Seattle's best country band, Western Centuries, plays in the studio before their gig at Steve's Guitars.

Grizzly Goat In-Studio

Mar 16, 2018

Grizzly Goat visited Express Yourself before two local gigs, at Glenwood Brew Garden and Steve's Guitars, and blew us all away with their music. Their melodies are memorable, they definitely have an easy and precise way with a lyric, their harmonies are super-tight, and they are all multi-instrumentalists--their musicianship is superb. They played Gentle Wild Spaces, Colorado and Little Jackie. Colorado was the highlight of the week for this reviewer. Look for them to return in August and also search out their new album Burning the Prairie.

The Deer Live on KDNK

Feb 24, 2017

"I'm drinking up morphine/Straight from the vial/Me in my darkness/You in my mind."

The Deer, Austin's answer to Elephant Revival, has an elliptical way with a lyric and delicate but complex melodies that surround and suffuse the words, and it adds up to something psychedelic and irresistable. They were in town to play at Steve's Guitars and they dropped by KDNK to say hello and play Winter to Pry and Up Into Roses from their recent CD Tempest and Rapture. They also played an older song, Shades of Tiffany

New Orleanian Seth Walker has an assured new release featuring his family called Gotta Get Back. Luke spoke to him on Express Yourself. They decided Seth needs some wingtip galoshes and that music can cure what ails ya.

Coming to the Hotel Colorado on Saturday, January 21

This week's Express Yourself features a snowshoe race, a womens' documentary film festival, and a swinging bluesman visiting Steve's Guitars tomorrow.
