In the November election, Colorado voters will consider Proposition DD, a ballot initiative to legalize sports betting that would impose a 10 percent tax on all gambling activities. Sports betting itself might be the least controversial aspect of this legislation, it's where the tax revenues go that gets complicated.

For this week’s News Brief, KDNK’s Lucas Turner spoke with Sandra Fish, whose story on how Leadership PACs work and what they pay for was published in the Colorado Sun last week.

Roaring Fork School District

Carbondale Middle School bilingual teacher Grace De La Sala was named the 2019 English as a Second Language Teacher of the Year by the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education. Grace spoke with KDNK News Director Lucas Turner about the award and the importance of bilingual education.

XCEL Energy

Over 30 electric transmission and distribution structures in Glenwood Canyon have reached their end of life use. A project is under way to replace these outdated power structures that involves helicopters, and lot of coordination between local, state, and federal agencies. Advocates of the 54 year-old Land and Water Conservation Fund are pushing Congress to pass a bill that would guarantee a permanent budget allocation. Lucas Turner spoke with Brian Kurzel from National Wildlife Federation's Rocky Mountain Regional Center about the fund and what a full budget allocation could mean for public lands.

A strike for Climate Action at Sopris Park tomorrow will feature speeches from students, local government officials, climate activists and more. The event is one of more than 800 actions across the country, ahead of next week’s UN Climate Summit in New York. Fred Malo, a volunteer for 350 Roaring Fork, is the primary organizer of the event.

City of Rifle

Rifle City's Election is over and the unofficial results are in. If the results hold, Councilors Joe Elliot and Ed Green will retain their Seats. Councilor Clint Hostettler will lose his seat to Brian Condie. Official results will be made available by Wednesday September 18th once all Uniformed and Oversees Citizens Absentee Ballots have come in, and any signature discrepancies have been resolved.

Carbondale’s town council voted tuesday to approve an ordinance requiring all retailers of tobacco products to obtain a license through the town. The ordinance also bans the sale of flavored tobacco products. KDNK's Lucas Turner features public comments from proponents and opponents of the ordinance.

These attacks lock down computer systems, requiring owners to pay a "ransom" to regain control.
