UPDATED MARCH 14 - 1pm MST:

Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) has advised the Pitkin County Public Health Department that one test for COVID-19 is presumptively positive for the virus. Pitkin County now has 11 presumptive positive cases with results from 23 tests still pending. Officials say a contact tracing investigation is underway to determine whether community transmission is taking place in Pitkin County.

 

Garfield County

The Garfield County Recycling Center along Highway 6 in Rifle is closed until further notice. According to a press release issued by the county Thursday, biohazardous waste was illegally dumped at the site, forcing the closure.

Eagle, Garfield, and Pitkin County issued a public health order Thursday to minimize the impacts and spread of COVID-19 in the region. The order is effective immediately and will be revisited on April 8th, 2020.

  Governor Jared Polis is ramping up the state’s response to the coronavirus as the number of cases continues to grow, especially in mountain communities. Officials have now reported over 40 cases of COVID-19 in Colorado after testing more than 300 people. Our state Capitol Reporter Scott Franz has been following the developments, and he joined us from Denver to provide the latest information.

Eagle County

 


  Eagle County Commissioners voted to extend the local disaster emergency declaration Tuesday in response to COVID-19. KDNK’s Lucas Turner reports on what the declaration means.

Carbondale Chief of Police Gene Schilling will retire in September after almost 40 years of service. Town staff is hard at work looking for someone to fill his shoes. On Thursday, March 12, the town hosts a meet and greet with 4 finalists for the position. KDNK’s Lucas Turner has more.

City of Glenwood Springs

The City of Glenwood Springs hosts its first virtual town hall meeting on Tuesday March 10th at 6pm. The meeting will feature information about upcoming infrastructure projects, and updates about the COVID 19 virus. Pitkin County Open Space and Trails

After extensive collaboration between community groups, and two public comment periods, Pitkin County officials Tuesday voted to adopt the new Penny Hot Springs Management Plan. KDNK’s Lucas Turner has more.

After months of negotiations, the Post Independent reports that Centura Health, Colorado’s largest healthcare provider is backing out of the Southwest Health Alliance, an offshoot of Summit County-based Peak Health Alliance, which Garfield County is expected to join.

  Colorado State University and Garfield County are partnering to create a new 12,000 square-foot 'education center' in Rifle. The two-story building will feature a shooting range, and spaces for the community and 4H members to explore woodworking, metal fabrication, cooking, gardening, quilting, sewing, robotics, and more.

Presidential Primary ballots for Garfield, Eagle and Pitkin County residents go out in the mail today. KDNK’s Lucas Turner has more details.

 


  In a letter sent to Colorado Oil and Gas Commission director Jeff Robins Thursday, activist group Colorado Rising for Communities and sister group Colorado Rising asked for clarification on the agency’s recent statement to the press. In the statement, the COGCC said it would not enforce penalties against oil and gas operators who failed to file over 50,000 required monthly well reports from 2016 through 2018.

St. George Community Kitchen

In 1992, Leadville residents started a community kitchen at the Saint George Episcopal Church. 30 years later, they want to expand their mission by renovating the kitchen. On Thursday, they’ll host a concert featuring folk duo Story Hill to raise money for the project. KDNK’s Lucas Turner spoke with Amy Frykholm a community meal supervisor, about the fundraiser, and what the proposed renovation could mean for food access in Lake County.

Carbondale Arts unveiled its strategic plan Monday after a year of work. It includes a revised mission statement, marketing and financial strategies, and clarification on the role of the Carbondale Creative District within Carbondale Arts. Executive Director Amy Kimberly says the new plan provides clarity and direction.

On Tuesday, Carbondale Trustees reviewed an update on the rollout of the town's new trash & recycling service. Public Works Director Kevin Schorzman and Mountain Waste & Recycling District Manager Mike Hinkley presented the report.
