Community Calendar for October 7th

Here’s your community calendar for First Friday, October 7th, underwritten by the Mount Sopris Rotary Club, meeting every Thursday at noon at Mi Casita in Carbondale. Rotary, service above self.

  • Aspen Community Foundation hosts an October Open House from 3:30 to 5 in Basalt.

  • At 4, LuluLemon in Aspen hosts a special happy hour focused on environmental politics with some high profile special guests. Olympian Simi Hamilton, pro-snowboarder & Protect Our Winters founder Jeremy Jones, and former pro snowboarder Jordie Karlinski will be on hand.

  • Midland Arts Company in Rifle’s First Friday Opening features painter Noemi Kosmoski from Glenwood Springs.

  • Crystal Glass Studio in Carbondale has new works displayed for First Friday. At 5, Glassroom instructor Shannon Muse of Paradise Art Glass who will be doing glass cutting demonstrations.

  • Join the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program tonight from 6-8 pm for a potluck and picnic table dedication right here in KDNK’s backyard (on the east side of the building). Everyone is welcome. The dedication is at 6:30 p.m. Bring a potluck dish to share if you like. Students in the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program raised money to purchase a picnic table and donate it to KDNK in memory of Andy Zanca.

  • The Glenwood Vaudeville Revue hosts Dinner Theatre at 6.

  • The Carbondale Clay Center presents an exhibition featuring new work from Steven Colby, an artist living and working in Carbondale. “There is no misunderstanding your world” opens with a reception from 6 to 8.

  • Carbondale Arts will host an Opening Reception for two exhibitions, ALLOY! and Feverish Migrations, from 6 to 8 at the R2 Gallery located in The Launchpad. The metal works exhibition ALLOY! features new work by local artists Haley Bates, Mark Cesark, Matt Haugh, Alison Finn, Reina Katzenberger, Olivia Pevec, Natasha Seedorf and Ira Sherman. Feverish Migrations brings together poetry by Cameron Scott and engraved prints by past Anderson Ranch printmaking instructor, Johanna Mueller.

  • At 7, Brad Vierheller mans the piano at Riviera Supper Club in Glenwood Springs.

  • Thunder River Theatre in Carbondale has kicked off their new season with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Tonight’s show is at 7:30.

  • At Steve’s Guitars, Dr. Banjo aka Pete Wernick of the legendary Colorado bluegrass band Hot Rize plays at 8 with support from Nurse Banjo, Joan Wernick, a DJ on our sister station KGNU.

  • Jill Cohn plays Glenwood Springs Brew Garden at 8:30.

  • Carbondale Beer Works has Guilty Pleasure with guest Paul Buechler at 9.

  • Time Peace play Rivers Restaurant in Glenwood at 9.

  • Mickey Avalon and DJ Naka G will be looking for trouble at Belly Up Aspen starting at 9:30.

  • Three Bad Jacks play Loyal Brothers Lounge in Glenwood. Some Kind of Hero opens at 9:30.

  • And at 10 it’s Latin Night with Axel at K Seas Wing House in Glenwood.

 
 

Gavin became one of the youngest station managers in public radio on February 1, 2017. He is a writer and producer with a passion for community media. Prior to starting at KDNK as news director in 2016, Gavin worked for national radio programs Alternative Radio with David Barsamian and Nonprofit Radio with Tony Martignetti along with local stations KGNU Boulder, KYRS Spokane, KRBX Boise, KAOS Olympia, and Air America Radio affiliate KPTK Seattle. His nonprofit management experience includes Open Media Foundation, where he led a government transparency team, and Common Frequency, where his policy advocacy supported dozens of noncommercial radio startups. Boulder Weekly, Raw Story, Austin American-Statesman, Boise Weekly, and The Sopris Sun have published his reporting. His TV credits include directing teams at Colorado Channel, crewing for Democracy Now!, and hosting on Free Speech TV. He graduated from the Evergreen State College in 2008 with a BA in media production and community organizing.
