Hazardous Waste Discovery Shuts Down County Recycling Center in Rifle

Garfield County

The Garfield County Recycling Center along Highway 6 in Rifle is closed until further notice. According to a press release issued by the county Thursday, biohazardous waste was illegally dumped at the site, forcing the closure.

This isn’t the first time biohazardous waste has been found at the site, says the county. But, signs prohibiting biohazards have not helped. The site opened in 2012 in conjunction with the City of Rifle and is now managed by Waste Management. An inter-governmental agreement with the county says that no hazardous materials may be placed at the recycling center.
