Local Newscast for October 5, 2016

KDNK's Local Newscast airs weekday mornings at 6:41 and 7:41 during Morning Edition.

On this year’s ballot, voters in Carbondale, Silt, Parachute and Garfield County will decide whether or not to opt out of restrictions on local government control over high speed Internet. Blake Mobley is IT Director for Rio Blanco County. In this clip from Geekspeak, Blake talks about Rio Blanco’s own ballot initiative, and the county’s decision to invest in infrastructure that is now delivering gigabit fiber to homes and businesses in Rangely and Meeker. Click here for the entire edition of Geekspeak.

Tonight in Aspen at the Limelight Hotel Lounge, Aspen Next Generation Advisory Commission and Aspen Young Professionals host an election event, featuring Pitkin County Commissioner candidates and representatives of local and statewide ballot questions. KDNK’s Gavin Dahl spoke to Skippy Mesirow, chair of Aspen NextGen, for details.

One of the more controversial issues on this year’s ballot is a proposal to create a single payer healthcare system for Colorado. Supporters of Amendment 69 say it would be cheaper and that everyone would have coverage. Opponents say it’s a tax hike and it’s not sustainable. But as Bente Birkeland reports, the one thing both sides can agree on is the current system has problems.

Dry Rifle Creek, east of the Rifle Gap Reservoir, and West Rifle Creek, west of the reservoir, are closed to motorized use through November 30th to improve hunting opportunities. Disturbances from cars, trucks, motorcycles, and ATVs push big game out of these areas so BLM has called for the closures as part of its Resource Management Plan.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario says that Colorado law does notrequire physical contact as a minimum standard to make a mandatory arrest. Domestic violence means an act or threatened actof violence upon a person with whom the suspect has been involved in an intimate relationship. DV also includes any other crime used as a method of coercion, control, punishment, intimidation or revenge.

Morning commuters in west Glenwood Springs should expect 20 minute delays in the Exit 114 interchange of I-70 for another few weeks while the eastbound off-ramp is down to one lane.

At the north end of the Grand Avenue Bridge in Glenwood, the right-turn to Sixth Street will be closed Monday through Friday for the next three weeks.

In Aspen, Main Street is closed this week from 7:30 AM to 9 PM between Galena and Spring Streets for a water line replacement.

The 8th Street Bridge in Glenwood Springs will be closed to vehicle traffic from this Saturday, October 8th to Tuesday, October 18th. The bridge closure will have a significant impact on those who want to go from downtown to Midland Avenue, for residents of Midland Avenue, and on school traffic. In the mornings, students will be transferred from bus to bus at Glenwood Springs High School. For busloads of middle school students who live in South Glenwood, Sopris Elementary will be a transfer station in the afternoons. For more info, contact the school district.
