This is the KDNK Community Calendar for Saturday, May 6th, underwritten by the MountSoprisRotary Club, meeting every Thursday at noon at Mi Casita in Carbondale. Rotary: Service above self. Click the headline for all your Derby fun.

  • Big Daddy’s Sports Bar in Glenwood throws an all-day Kentucky Derby Party with a Derby hat contest.  

  • SOL Theatre presents GODSPELL at the 3rd Street Center with two showings,first at 2 then at 7.

  • Pitkin County Library hosts Wizards of Hollywood with special effects expert Ed Kramer, at 4.

  • New Castle celebrates Derby Day to benefit the New Castle Community Market with music by the Leonard Curry Trio and a Derby hat contest beginning at 4.

  • The Orchard Gathering Center in Carbondale hosts a benefit to pay the medical costs for 3-year-old Peri Erickson at 5.

  • English in Action throws a Cinco de Derby party at the Art Base in Basalt with complimentary tequila and information for volunteering at 5:30.

  • Spellbinders presents award-winning storyteller Angel Vigil, “El Vaquero,” at the 3rd Street Center at 5:30.

  • Garfield County Fairgrounds hosts Laser Tag at 6.

  • The Glenwood Middle School presents Guys and Dolls at 7.

  • The Lost City of Z screens at the Crystal Theatre at 7:30.

  • Mugsy Fay plays at the Black Nugget at 9.

  • And MTHDS perform a tribute to the Beastie Boys at Belly Up Aspen at 10.

Looking ahead…

  • On Sunday, Basalt’s Color Run benefits the Aspen Hope Center and begins at Arbaney park 10:30.

  • Also on Sunday, the Art Base in Basalt will host a makers meet-up, open studio session from noon to 5.

  • And the Aspen Chapel hosts Sound Healing Meditation at 6:30.

  • Dandelion Day is back, next Saturday May 13th. KDNK will operate the beer tent with selections from Marble Distilling, Roaring Fork Beer Company and Black Bridge Winery in Paonia. All beer tent proceeds benefit KDNK.

Raleigh Burleigh was raised in the historic floodplanes of Satank. The Carbondale Rotary Club sponsored him as a youth ambassador to Chile the year before his graduation from Roaring Fork High School. He studied International Affairs and Journalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder then applied those studies traveling throughout South America the following year. Returning to Carbondale thereafter, Raleigh acquired an internship with KDNK News which led to the opportunity to serve as News Director from 2017 to 2019. After another trip to South America in early 2019, Raleigh Burleigh drew deeper into the confluence as Program Director at KDNK. Raleigh now serves on KDNK's board of directors and as editor of Carbondale's weekly newspaper, The Sopris Sun.
