"She Taught Life Lessons." ACES Beloved Golden Eagle Remembered

One of the oldest captive Golden Eagles in the world, well-known to Aspen Center for Environmental Studies visitors, passed away recently. KDNK spoke with Naturalist Director Jim Kravitz, who was the bird's handler for many years, about working with her.

According to ACES the eagle, who has lived at Hallam Lake since the early 1980s, apparently died from a sudden illness. The exact cause of death is still unknown.

The eagle was originally found by hikers near Aspen in 1982 and had to be treated for a broken wing and leg by raptor rehab experts in Fort Collins. She went on to became one of ACES' longest-serving environmental educators. Her injuries prevented her from being returned to the wild.

Kravitz estimates that the bird was seen by nearly 10,000 people a year for more than 30 years. ACES officials are putting together a remembrance of the eagle through stories and photos. They'll release details about it soon.
