Check this page for the latest updates on the Grizzly Creek Fire and links to official information sources for evacuations and closures. Closures now include the area burned by the fire and hiking trails into the burned area, including Hanging Lake, Grizzly Creek and No Name. The Glenwood Canyon Bike Path and other Colorado River recreation areas from Dotsero through Glenwood Canyon to No Name also remain closed.
The Grizzly Creek Fire has burned over 32,400 acres and is 91% contained but not before two Type 1 Incident Management Teams from the Great Basin and Alaska, swooped in to bring the blaze under control. Roads are beginning to open up but the Glenwood Canyon is still too dangerous to ride a bike or walk through or hang out at the rest areas. This week's show features a clip from the final, live Facebook update, held almost every other night for a month, by the leading team. The show also features two stories by the KDNK News Team from inside the fire perimeter.
Over the past two decades, most of Colorado’s wildfires lit up in the months of June and July. This year? The state saw six fires spark in August, half of which set records in size. To learn more, KDNK’s Kathleen Shannon spoke with the Colorado State Climatologist and Director of Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University, Russ Schumacher.
From incendiary 'dragonballs' dropped by unmanned aerial systems, to bulldozed firelines, to logistical support, fighting the Grizzly Creek fire has been a massive undertaking. For a closer look at how it all works, KDNK's Lucas Turner takes a trip to active operations for the southern portion of the fire on Bair Ranch.
The Grizzly Creek Fire has scorched close to 30,000 acres and, as of Sunday afternoon, is 30% contained. Interstate 70 through the Glenwood Canyon has been closed for over a week due to the fire. No Name homes have stood empty and locals have been worried about Hanging Lake. Earlier this week, KDNK reporter Kathleen Shannon and News Director Amy Hadden Marsh got a tour of the western end of the Canyon, including a glimpse of the Hanging Lake trailhead. Here's their report.
