Wild Horses and Burros at Risk

The proposed federal budget would cut funding for the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Programby 12%. Most of the program’s funding goes to holding costs for about 44,000 mustangs. The proposed budget allows the BLM to use management tools including unlimited sale and to possibly kill horses in holding. The Colorado-based Cloud Foundation, a wild horse education and advocacy group, is at the forefront of promoting better range management and fertility control to keep mustang herds in check. Cloud Foundation executive director Ginger Kathrens joined KDNK’s Amy Hadden Marsh on Valley Voices recently. Here are some highlights from the show.
