On October 1st, the Town of Carbondale Board of Trustees voted unanimously to recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day, rather than Columbus Day. The new event was inaugurated by historian and former Northern Ute Tribal Chairman Roland McCook, accompanied by drummers and dancers from the Ute Mountan Ute Tribe located in southwest Colorado. Eleanor E. Yates was born in Denver, Colorado and has traveled the world painting murals. Ella is now channeling her creative positivity into creating Spirit-Up! It's a tabletop game that aims to inspire happiness and fun in its players. The community is invited to play a demo at the Third Street Center in the Senior Matters room on Thursday at 5pm, or Friday through Monday from 5:30 to 6:30pm.

Artist Madeline Wiener is carving a sculpture, commissioned by the City of Glenwood Springs, to be installed next to the pedestrian bridge on the north landing. KDNK's Raleigh Burleigh visited MARBLE/marble to chat with Madeline and local sculptors Lucas Leone and Rex Branson.

Roaring Fork Insight

Lisa Goddard founded Roaring Fork Insight to make meditation practices accessible and approachable for residents of the Roaring Fork Valley. In addition to weekly practices in Carbondale and Aspen, Roaring Fork Insight offers a one-day silent meditation at Flying Dog Ranch on July 14.

Krista Gaudio launched GrowHands in January of 2019. This salt scrub is designed to remove plant resin from hands, although it also works to remove other substances. Krista's intention is to share this and other chemical-free products with as many people as possible to support a more sustainable future.

Sanctuary Unidos presents Refuge(e) and Vida En Santuario, two short films that reveal the hardship of immigrants seeking asylum in the United States. Raleigh Burleigh spoke to filmmakers Sylvia Johnson and Laurel Smith about their work. The event is on May 29 at the Crystal Theatre at 5:30.

Heartsong is an amalgamation of thought and audio: a poetic experiment with anthro-apologetic tendencies. In previous episodes, archived here, KDNK's Raleigh Burleigh recounted his journey South, renewing established connections in Chile and Argentina. The primary goal of this latest adventure was to learn about the Mapuche, a proud indigenous nation of the Southern Cone of South America. The word Mapuche translates literally as “People of the Earth.”

Jueves, 21 de febrero, Moira Millán, weichafe mapuche perteneciente al Lof Pillán Mahuiza se presentó en la Cámara Federal de Apelaciones de Comodoro Rivadavia ante acusaciones de coacción doblemente agravada contra el juez Guido Otrando debido a una ocupación pacifica del Juzgado Federal de Esquel el 20 de septiembre de 2017. El juez Guido Otrando había mandado allanamientos sufridos por la comunidad Vuelta del Rió y Moira Millán accionó en solidaridad con sus integrantes. Después de dar su defensa contra una apelación que pretenda deshacer su absolución ya declarada, Moira Millán dió este discurso frente al publico de Comodoro Rivadavia, el Movimiento de Mujures Indigenas por El Buen Vivir y observadores y medios internacionales.

On January 19th, about 24 hours before a total lunar eclipse, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake rattled Tongoy, Chile. KDNK’s Raleigh Burleigh, who is in Chile, was attending an opera at the time. Diane Orlov founded the Angel of Hope Mosaic Project to remind each of us that we are angels unto one another. KDNK's Raleigh Burleigh visited her studio in Carbondale to learn more about the giant mosaic that she is putting together in celebration of the Roaring Fork Valley. The mural will be installed outside of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Glenwood Springs.

Josiah Utsch, a senior at Colorado Rocky Mountain School, is dedicated to raising awareness about the nautilus, an ancient, shelled species related to the squid and octopus. Despite having survived several mass extinctions over 500 million years, the nautilus is now in danger of disappearing.  Josiah gave a presentation to students at Basalt Middle School about his nonprofit Save the Nautilus on Thursday, December 6. KDNK's Raleigh Burleigh interviewed him shortly after that presentation.

Nyibol Bior

Before she was 10 years old, Nyibol Bior had walked over 1,000 miles between three countries as a Sudanese refugee. In the most difficult of times she has consistenly found a voice of encouragement helping her to overcome each trial. Nyibol now lives in Colorado and stopped by KDNK to tell her story while teaching summer school in Carbondale.

For nearly four years, Basalt High School graduating senior Mauricio Sosa has labored to transform a grassy alcove into a communal safe-space for reflection and connection. The Community is invited to celebrate a ribbon-cutting party for the Peace Garden at Basalt High School on June 1st at 4pm.

Colombian lawyer, activist and filmmaker Diana Ojeda is carrying an invitation from the oldest Wiwa population in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia to the Lakota Tribe in South Dakota. She is guided by an indigenous prophesy that transforms five hundred years of oppression into an opportunity for global re-unification. A teaser for Guardians of the Earth, the film that she is creating to document this momentous occasion, will be shown at the Glenwood Springs Library on Wednesday, June 6, at 4pm and at the Launchpad in Carbondale on Friday, June 9, at 7pm.
