Robbie Romero and Dennis Banks

Apache activist and musician Robby Romero shared his new single Born on the Rez on KDNK's Beyond Beyond. Produced by Don Was and including Jim Keltner and Kris Kristofferson, among others, the song features a swelling gospel chorus, some blues harmonica, and drums that sounded from the center of the Earth. He also shared some inspiring words about the continuing power and relevance of the Standing Rock protest. It was a wide-ranging conversation with KDNK's Luke Nestler that also featured a couple of original live songs.

The Aspen Choral Society has been invited to perform Handel's Messiah at Carnegie Hall on November 25.  Choir Director Paul Dankers stopped by Express Yourself to share the excitement. The Aspen Choral Society will also be performing Messiah at Grace Church in Basalt on December 14, at The Wheeler Opera House on December 15, and at St Stephens in Glenwood Springs on December 16.

Dj Hill

DJ Hill will premier her Homespun Mercies, a compliation of poems written over two decades, at the opening reception for The Red Brick Center for the Arts exhibition More Than Thread on November 15. In addition to making available copies of her book at this reception, DJ Hill's mixed-media piece called "Release," which graces the cover of Homespun Mercies, will be on display. DJ stopped by KDNK's Express Yourself to share about her work.

Pam and Dan Rosenthal have a goal of skiing all the Ikon pass resorts in North America this winter while performing music to promote climate action and sustainable living. Pam and Dan will also be celebrating their 30th anniversary during this tour.

Activist and musician Gabrielle Louise and filmmaker Naropa Sabine stopped by Express Yourself to speak with KDNK's Raleigh Burleigh about their music video for Industry, a new single from Gabrielle that tells the story of Paonia’s push to preserve the North Fork Valley.

Mauricio Lopez-Marquez and Francisco Nevarez Burguño of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet are joined by two dance students, Jose Monge and Solana Teitler, on Express Yourself with Megan Tackett and Raleigh Burleigh to share their love of Día de los Muertos and folklórico dance.

Local singer-songwriter Leah Grams Johnson stopped by The Gospel of Music to chat with DB about two songwriting clinics she will lead at the Carbondale Library on October 25 and November 1 at 6pm.

Dance Initiative

Chuck Wilt is one of six dancers in residence at The Launchpad in Carbondale from New York City. Chuck and his company UNA Projects will be performing at Dance Initiative’s 7th Annual Spectrum Dance Festival on October 19 and 20. Chuck stopped by Express Yourself to share with KDNK's Raleigh Burleigh about the event.

Rock Mountain Scots

Before marching in procession to the 4th Street Plaza to kick off Carbondale's 17th Annual Celtic Fest & Oktoberfest, the Rocky Mountain Scots stopped by KDNK to play a number live in the on air studio. Fran Page, founding member and executive director for Aspen Dance Connection, joined in to share about the organization's work of bringing cultural experiences to the Roaring Fork Valley.

Neither Wolf Nor Dog

The first-ever Shining Mountains Film Festival features the Aspen premier of Neither Wolf Nor Dog on Monday, October 8. KDNK’s Raleigh Burleigh spoke with director Steven Lewis Simpson about his adaptation of the award-winning novel by Kent Nerburn and the experience of working with the late Chief Dave Bald Eagle.

Gavin Dahl

Actor Wes Studi, star of movies like Geronimo, Dances With Wolves, Last of the Mohicans,  Avatar, and Hostiles, stopped by the station this week. He hopped on the mic with KDNK’s Luke Nestler and Gavin Dahl, joined by local filmmaker Anuk Bald Eagle to tout the film they’re premiering at the Shining Mountain Film Festival next weekend in Aspen, called Whitewashed. It premiers next Sunday, October 7th at 6:30pm at the Wheeler Opera House.

The Carbondale Clay Center's biggest fundraiser of the year is this Saturday, September 22! To learn more, Megan Tackett spoke with executive director Angela Bruno about the Throwdown Hoedown.

After nearly 20 years as a fine furniture maker in the Roaring Fork Valley, Brad Reed Nelson stretches into new territory with an exhibit at the ArtBase in Basalt that features site-specific installations rather than his furniture. KDNK’s Luke Nestler spoke to Brad about his furniture and his show at the ArtBase, which opens with a reception next Friday, September 14 at the Charles Wyly Gallery at 5pm.

Per-Fume of Prayer: Reclaiming Shock and Sorrow

Tanya Blacklight and Christine Palafox have organized a number of ceremonial dances and prayer in the North Fork Valley. Tanya joined Raleigh on Express Yourself to talk about the power of those events and a short film documenting them that will premier at the Inspired: Art at Work Symposium in Paonia.

Leah Concialdi, Frank Roddy and Casey Hrdlicka comprise only 30% of their band Atomga. But they did a good job introducing the KDNK audience to their band's sound. Atomga Beer from Brazil, the mathematics of polyrhythms and snippets of Fela Kuti and Bixiga from Sao Paulo complete this audio snapshot of the Denver Afrobeat band which headlined KDNK's Hoot.

El Javi has found a home away from home in the Roaring Fork Valley. Here he speaks about his art before his appearance at KDNK's Hoot.

Banjira Live on KDNK

Banjira is a Carbondale acoustic trio. Sonny Morehouse, Eric Baumheier and Aja McAdams have been playing together a couple of years and have created a sound infusing African rhythms with banjo and guitar. They played three songs live on Express Yourself and also talked about the origin of their sound.

Tracy Ford--singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist for the Durango band The Crags--talks about her band and their music. Their first gig in the Roaring Fork Valley is a high profile one: Sunday afternoon at Mountain Fair.
