Local Student Activists Attempt Different Tactics to Make Change

Students from Roaring Fork High School, Colorado Rocky Mountain School, and Glenwood Springs High School speak about their organizing efforts here in the valley and in college. With social movements growing across the country, these students are acting locally to make a difference in many different ways.

The 2020 AZYEP Online Summer Workshop spent eight weeks learning about news, types of media, photojournalism, storytelling, different forms of writing, social media, and radio. For their final project , they presents short interviews exploring life as a teen in the Roaring Fork Valley.

The Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program talks with Mike Trehy, co-director of "Livin' Like Ribich" which screens at the drive-in theater at Buttermilk Mountain on Tuesday, August 11th from 8:30-10:00 PM. The documentary is a tribute to late AZYEP DJ Tyler Ribich - aka "Ty the Rayman" - and portrays the impact Ribich made in the Roaring Fork Valley.  More information at the Tyler Ribich Ray of Light Fund on Facebook.

Every summer in Carbondale, the High School High Scholar program, also known as (HS)2, hosts 75 first-generation high school students for 5 weeks of rigorous classes and exciting outdoor adventures. Listen here to the incredible voices of a few of those students performing music and poetry for their annual talent show, Coffee House.

The Andy Zanca Youth Empowement Program presents local community experts and students sharing their opinions and experience using restorative justice (R.J.) to rectify harm and solve conflicts among youth. Jonathan Greener of Stepping Stones and Karen Barbie of YouthZone speak about the impacts of implementing R.J. in the valley.

Carbondale Community School shares the fruits of their community garden by turning a learning space into a Compassion Project. Extra food produced will be donated to LiftUp while the kids continue to grow as much as possible this summer.

Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program's Dimensions in Diversity host Steve Mills talks with childrens book author Cathy Heyliger about LGBTQ+ allyship and her book "Love is..." Support for this program comes from AspenOUT.

AZYEP Celebrates Pride Month

In lieu of this year's high school alternative prom and as a way to support youth GSAs in their organizing efforts, the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program hosted a Pride Month Radio Show - celebrating Queer People of Color. AZYEP took requests from kids and played two hours of music by Queer artists, many of which are people of color. This show is supported by AspenOut and includes messages of hope for LGBTQ+ youth.

Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program DJs and Carbondale Middle School Graduates Quinn Wells and Laura Carmona present a CMS end-of-the-year special. The program includes poems from 5th grade teachers, a song for Carbondale by AZYEP DJ Lily Webber and messages for the end of the school year.
