West Slope residents headed to the Front Range for Thanksgiving with friends and family will get a break from ongoing repairs and construction in the Glenwood Canyon. But, as KDNK's Morgan Neely reports, eastbounders should still plan for one lane of traffic.

UPDATE: Glenwood Canyon reopened completely around 6:30 Monday night (6/28/21) after close to 24 hours of closure due to the second mudslide in 3 days. CDOT worked around the clock to open I70. Meanwhile, Cottonwood Pass and Independence Pass saw heavy traffic. Rain is in the forecast this week. CDOT urges travelers to have alternate plans in place in case of future I70 closures.

From incendiary 'dragonballs' dropped by unmanned aerial systems, to bulldozed firelines, to logistical support, fighting the Grizzly Creek fire has been a massive undertaking. For a closer look at how it all works, KDNK's Lucas Turner takes a trip to active operations for the southern portion of the fire on Bair Ranch.

XCEL Energy

Over 30 electric transmission and distribution structures in Glenwood Canyon have reached their end of life use. A project is under way to replace these outdated power structures that involves helicopters, and lot of coordination between local, state, and federal agencies. Lucas Turner spoke with XCEL's area manager Kelly Flenniken on the nature of the project.

Highway crews continue to remove large boulders and fix road damage. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, travelers should expect periodic short closures of the interstate through the weekend.

Amy's guest is longtime Roaring Fork Valley resident and historian Larry Rynearson (father of KDNK's own Modern Marty Rynearson), who has written several books about the area, including Legends of the Glenwood Canyon: A history of Colorado's premier river canyon. This book and Colorado's Historic Mountain Passes, with photography by Rick Jones, are available in Carbondale at Bonfire Coffee and the Village Smithy.
