Good news for Garfield County came down earlier this month when a Federal Judge recommended halting one of two lawsuits filed by Rocky Mountain Resources, owner of the Mid-Continent Limestone Quarry near Glenwood Springs. Basalt Town Council and Carbondale trustees Tuesday night voted unanimously to oppose the Mid-Continent Limestone Quarry expansion in Glenwood Springs. KDNK’s Lucas Turner attended the Carbondale meeting.

Glenwood Springs mayor Pro-tem Shelley Kaup, Councilor Paula Stepp, and City Manager Debra Figueroa presented to Carbondale trustees prior to the vote.

As reported yesterday by KDNK’s Amy Hadden Marsh, Rocky Mountain Resource Management officially submitted a proposal to expand the Limestone Quarry near Glenwood Springs. If the Bureau of Land Management considers the expansion proposal complete then it will be posted for public review and eventually a public comment period will begin under the National Environmental Policy Act. Members of the public are already talking about possible impacts of the expansion, including fourth and fifth graders at Two Rivers Community School.

Rocky Mountain Resource Management, or RMR, has permission to drill exploratory holes up to 200 feet deep winin the existing boundaries of the limestone quarry above Glenwood Springs. It's not an expansion, but the Bureau of Land Management expects a proposal soon. KDNK's Amy Hadden Marsh has more.
