This week on Everything Under The Sun, renowned guitarist Hiroya Tsukamoto stops by to perform a few songs ahead of a show at the Third Street Center.

This Spring, Lily Webber released her first album, "Gamblin' Pennies." She's written, recorded, produced, and edited all of the songs with the help of a few friends. Listen as she shares some of the tracks and talks about the process. 

Every summer in Carbondale, the High School High Scholar program, also known as (HS)2, hosts 75 first-generation high school students for 5 weeks of rigorous classes and exciting outdoor adventures. KDNK's Spring Membership Drive 2020 ended on a heartfelt note at DJ "Ancient" Art Ackerman hosted Swing, Swing, Swing from his home in Carbondale. Station Manager Gavin Dahl made it possible to take these precautions by picking up Art's records and spinning them from the studio. Here we present some highlights. Harvey Preston Gallery

Denver-based, jazz-trio Smirk performed a special concert for KDNK at the Harvey Preston Gallery in Aspen on March 7. Music Director Cody Lee forayed into the fray with our portable Tascam microphone that resembles a troll doll with it's fluffy windscreen. Here are some highlights.

Ley Line returns to Steve's Guitars on Saturday, February 22, at 8:30.

Symphony in the Valley

Symphony in the Valley performs The Nutracker with some added zest on December 6 at New Hope Church in New Castle at 7pm, then on December 7 at the Ute Theater in Rifle at 7pm, and again at the Ute Theater on December 8 at 2pm. Music Director Kelly Thompson, Manager Amanda Watkins, and President Ruth Mollman joined Raleigh Burleigh on Express Yourself to preview the event which includes an original arrangement by a local 8th grader.

Jan Garrett

Gwen’s guest this month is award-winning singer-songwriter Jan Garrett. After touring with John Denver and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jan’s own message has become one of universal healing and peace. Along with her husband and musical partner, JD Martin, she has won multiple awards including the “Seal of Excellence” from the Positive Music Association.

SOL Theatre Company


Stage of Life Theatre Company is rehearsing an original musical written and directed by local youth. Honeybee premiers on Thursday, July 18 at 7pm and continues on July 19 and 20. Brooke MacKay and Jenny Henry stopped by Express Yourself with the details.

KDNK’s Luke Nestler and Cody Lee talked on Roots, Branches, and Buds this week about some of their recent musical discoveries and the major CD and vinyl donations received this year. They and several volunteer DJs are in the midst of a major project in the KDNK music library, as they get ready for Potato Day and the KDNK Record Hop, on Saturday, October 6th from 9am to 3pm.

Niceness, a group that describes itself as “”positively grounded Rocky Mountain roots reggae” integrates elements of soul, funk, latin, and hip-hop. KDNK presented Niceness at The Temporary on July 13. Bonte Lane aka Pam Rosenthal is guiding a playful sound exploration workshop on July 17, 31, and August 14 at the Third Street Center at 7pm.

I attended the Western States Public Radio annual conference at KEXP Seattle on a scholarship that will reimburse KDNK for my airfare, hotel, and expenses. We toured KEXP, listened to presentations by executives at public media development organization Greater Public, and met the director of Seattle’s Office of Film + Music.
