Garfield County

The Garfield County Recycling Center along Highway 6 in Rifle is closed until further notice. According to a press release issued by the county Thursday, biohazardous waste was illegally dumped at the site, forcing the closure.

  Colorado State University and Garfield County are partnering to create a new 12,000 square-foot 'education center' in Rifle. The two-story building will feature a shooting range, and spaces for the community and 4H members to explore woodworking, metal fabrication, cooking, gardening, quilting, sewing, robotics, and more.

Symphony in the Valley

Symphony in the Valley performs The Nutracker with some added zest on December 6 at New Hope Church in New Castle at 7pm, then on December 7 at the Ute Theater in Rifle at 7pm, and again at the Ute Theater on December 8 at 2pm. Music Director Kelly Thompson, Manager Amanda Watkins, and President Ruth Mollman joined Raleigh Burleigh on Express Yourself to preview the event which includes an original arrangement by a local 8th grader.

The Middle Mamm Fire was started by lightning on July 28th and is burning approximately 10 miles south of Rifle, Colorado. High winds and dry conditions have caused increased active fire behavior, smoke, and potential for growth. Emergency closures have been issued in the vicinity of the fire.

City of Rifle

Rifle City's Election is over and the unofficial results are in. If the results hold, Councilors Joe Elliot and Ed Green will retain their Seats. Councilor Clint Hostettler will lose his seat to Brian Condie. Official results will be made available by Wednesday September 18th once all Uniformed and Oversees Citizens Absentee Ballots have come in, and any signature discrepancies have been resolved.

Myrnall Fletchall, Mountain Family Health Centers

Brandon Fletchall is a senior at Rifle High School and until a few weeks ago he had anticipated leaving the country before accruing unlawful presence. Brandon was brought to the country as a child and his dream is to serve the country as a military anesthesiologist. In March, Brandon traveled to Washington, D.C. with Mountain Family Health Centers CEO Ross Brooks to talk with members of Congress about the need for a path forward for children without immigration status. For today’s Valley Voices, Raleigh Burleigh interviews Brandon and his mother Myrnall about their journey.
