Roaring Fork School District teachers are undergoing multiple shifts between virtual and in-person learning. Some teachers spoke out about what these transitions are like and how they think it will impact teachers long-term. KDNK's Halle Zander reports.

Raising a Reader Aspen to Parachute

 

 

Soon after COVID-19 shut down schools, local school districts started delivering regular meals to locations from Aspen to Parachute. But the shutdown meant many students also lost access to story books that were being provided every week by local non-profit "Raising A Reader." The organization adapted to start including story books with Roaring Fork School District's free meals program. KDNK's Lucas Turner spoke with Raising a Reader Executive Director Cindy Blachly to learn more.

They can receive one breakfast and one lunch per day, regardless of or where they attend school or, household income status. Parents and legal guardians can pick up meals without children present. Colorado Succeeds

In recognition of the Senior Capstones Program started in 2016, Roaring Fork School District has been selected as one of three finalists for the Excellence In Education Innovation Award from Colorado Succeeds. KDNK News Director Lucas Turner spoke with Capstone Coordinator Tom Penzel to learn more about the capstone program and the upcoming awards ceremony in Denver.

With vaping on the rise among youth, especially in Colorado, Youth Zone is piloting a project with the Roaring Fork School District to intervene before students are issued a ticket. To learn more about the program, KDNK’s Raleigh Burleigh spoke with Youth Zone executive director Lori Mueller.

Next week, the Roaring Fork Schools are hosting a community visioning process to engage with parents, staff, students, community members, and partners about their hopes for our children and schools. KDNK’s Raleigh Burleigh spoke with Superintendent Rob Stein to learn more about the meetings scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 on Tuesday, November 6th at Glenwood Springs Elementary School, on Wednesday, November 7 at Crystal River Elementary School in Carbondale and on Thursday, November 8 at Basalt High School.

The Roaring Fork School District Board of Education passed a resolution in support of Amendment 73 which would raise an estimated $1.6 billion annually for Colorado schools through a tax increase on corporations and individuals and families earning over $150,000 a year. Roaring Fork School District students in Glenwood Springs are taking a different kind of bus to school this fall. The Walking Bus is designed to reduce traffic on downtown streets during morning and afternoon commutes until the new Grand Avenue Bridge opens. And, as KDNK’s Amy Hadden Marsh found out, Glenwood’s Walking Bus has some unique qualities.

Friday is Kindergarten Enrollment Day at Roaring Fork Schools. KDNK's Gavin Dahl spoke to the school district’s Senior Project Manager Angie Davlyn to find out all the last-minute details parents need to know.

 

And, congratulations to six Roaring Fork High School students who have received Boettcher and Daniels Fund scholarships for college. The Boettcher prize offers a full-ride to schools within Colorado; the Daniels Fund offers a full-ride to any school in the nation. The Sopris Sun reports that the recipients are Tavia Teitler, Julia Lee, Enrique Gonzalez, Nick Penzel, Lorenzo Andrade, and Fabian Rico.

Update from RFSD at 1:13PM: The Roaring Fork Schools and the Carbondale Police Department believe there is no credible threat to our students, and we have lifted lockout restrictions at this time.


Last year, voters approved a $122 million dollar bond for Roaring Fork School District. KDNK featured an interview last week with Adam Volek, principal of the new Eastbank school under construction in south Glenwood Springs. Today, KDNK News Director Gavin Dahl speaks to Jeff Gatlin, Chief Operating Officer for Roaring Fork Schools, about teacher housing, school construction, and the projects completed the first year.  Roaring Fork School District publishes an executive summary of bond projects before the first School Board meeting each month.
