Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of life and loved ones, with deep roots in Mexican culture. Those living and working in the Roaring Fork Valley have several opportunities to join the festivities this weekend. A community ofrenda organized by Carbondale Arts has been up in Carbondale since Tuesday, and will remain up until November 11th. KDNK spoke with Omar Sarabia, the Director of Defiende Nuestra Tierra about their involvement in the local events, and some of the practices that define the holiday which residents and visitors may encounter this weekend.
The Carbondale Arts event in conjunction with First Friday the 4th street plaza continues until 9 tonight. Space and materials for building ofrendas is available at the Glenwood Springs Community Art Center tomorrow, and each altar space is $10 for groups to reserve. A showing of the Disney film “Coco” is at 1pm. Altar building is from noon until 3, with a community reception from 3 to 5 p.m.
