President Donald Trump is demanding the release of former Mesa County clerk Tina Peters, who is serving a nine-year sentence for her role in a 2021 breach of Mesa County’s election systems. President Trump has threatened Colorado with "harsh measures" if Peters is not released from prison.Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, who is running in the 2026 Attorney General Race, has pushed back against calls to intervene.KDNK recently spoke with Griswold about the Tina Peters case and about the broader issue of election security in Colorado.

Update 9/11/25: The shooter, 16-year-old Desmond Holly, died Wednesday night of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two students he injured remain in the hospital. One of them is still in critical condition. The fourth student took themselves to the hospital for injuries they sustained in their escape from the high school.

Thousands of people in the U.S. Department of Agriculture were fired in February as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to downsize the federal workforce. Although wildland firefighters were exempt from the mass firing, many fired federal employees had secondary wildfire-fighting responsibilities. This came during a busy wildfire season in Western Colorado, which included the fourth-largest wildfire in state history. Now the White River National Forest is hoping to fill fourteen new positions.
