Aspen's Armory Hall, back when it was still serving as City Hall. Residents are asking a lot of the 1890s-era building.

The historic Armory at the intersection of Hopkins and Galena has been vacant for about a year and a half. That’s when the city completed construction of their new $35 million compound above Rio Grande Park. The Aspen Times reports that surveys, focus groups and open house meetings indicate residents want a top-notch community center in the Armory. That would feature casual dining, nonprofit space, and cheaper retail shopping. A bare-minimum remodel would cost more than $7 million, but council is pressing pause while staff searches for between $18-23 million dollars in funding to go all-in. That will likely include some big asks to major philanthropists.
