Will Month FAQ

I want to make a will. Where do I start?

The first consideration is the complexity of your estate and family situation:

If your estate is fairly straightforward and simple, you can make a will online for free through a site like freewill.com.

If you have a business, multiple properties, trusts and sophisticated tax instruments, a complex group of beneficiaries, or any factors that could cause conflict, confusion, or a court date you may want to begin by talking to an estate lawyer or certified financial planner first.

This primer from the American Bar Association offers a more in depth introduction to wills.

I want to include KDNK in my will. How do I do that?

The most common methods are to identify a specific sum or percentage of your estate and use language like this to include KDNK:

"I give the sum of $__________ to Carbondale Community Access Radio, located at 76 S. 2nd Street, Carbondale, CO 81623, with the Federal Tax ID No.74-2224605, to be used for its general charitable purposes." For Fixed Dollar Amounts (General Bequest)

"I give ______% of my total estate to Carbondale Community Access Radio, located at 76 S. 2nd Street, Carbondale, CO 81623, with the Federal Tax ID No. 74-2224605, to be used for its general charitable purposes." For Percentage of Estate (Percentage Bequest)

If you would like to give specific property or stocks to KDNK that may require further professional involvement. If you contact KDNK staff, we can work with you to furnish any necessary information or find the answers to your questions.
