  • At 5 the Gallery at the Red Brick in Aspen hosts a First Thursday Opening Reception for a new show called Journeys Abroad featuring Local Artists: Dede Brinkman, Jesse Bell Denver, Anne Foster, Junee Kirk, Vallee Noone, Susan Olsen, Mike Otte and Georgeann Waggaman.

  • At 5:30, Justice Snow’s hosts the Aspen Entrepreneurs Showcase. Jordan Lewis of Silverpeak Apothecary will talk about his life and business, along with the larger impact of legal cannabis.

  • Basalt Library teaches the basics of email at 5:30.

  • Garfield County’s Energy Advisory Board hosts a community program at 5:30 in Rifle. Chuck Anderson, Mammals Research Section Leader for Colorado Parks and Wildlife will address the preliminary results from an ongoing Colorado Parks and Wildlife research study into the impacts of natural gas development on mule deer population dynamics. The Piceance Basin supports one of the largest migratory mule deer populations in North America. Over the past 15 years, natural gas development has increased rapidly in this formerly undisturbed area.

  • At 6, Pitkin County Library in Aspen presents “At One With The Elements, A Cycling and Hiking Journey Around Iceland” featuring Matthew Cull.

  • Kyle Jones mans the piano at The Riviera Supper Club in Glenwood Springs at 7.

  • And Belly Up Aspen has an interesting evening tonight. Starting at 9:30, the ski film “Pleasure” will be screened. Then Berkel Beats will be up next with DJ Lo G spinning at 10:30.

Looking ahead…

  • Join the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program on First Friday, October 7th from 6-8 pm for a potluck and picnic table dedication right here in KDNK’s backyard (on the east side of the building). Everyone is welcome. The dedication is at 6:30 p.m. Bring a potluck dish to share if you like. Students in the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program raised money to purchase a picnic table and donate it to KDNK in memory of Andy Zanca.

Gavin became one of the youngest station managers in public radio on February 1, 2017. He is a writer and producer with a passion for community media. Prior to starting at KDNK as news director in 2016, Gavin worked for national radio programs Alternative Radio with David Barsamian and Nonprofit Radio with Tony Martignetti along with local stations KGNU Boulder, KYRS Spokane, KRBX Boise, KAOS Olympia, and Air America Radio affiliate KPTK Seattle. His nonprofit management experience includes Open Media Foundation, where he led a government transparency team, and Common Frequency, where his policy advocacy supported dozens of noncommercial radio startups. Boulder Weekly, Raw Story, Austin American-Statesman, Boise Weekly, and The Sopris Sun have published his reporting. His TV credits include directing teams at Colorado Channel, crewing for Democracy Now!, and hosting on Free Speech TV. He graduated from the Evergreen State College in 2008 with a BA in media production and community organizing.
