The Rad Trads is a unique band for sharing the spotlight between five distinct singer-songwriters. Michael Fatum, Michael Harlen, Alden Harris-McCoy, and Patrick Sargent spoke with KDNK's Cody Lee and Raleigh Burleigh ahead of their performance at Vail Snow Days on Saturday, December 13.

Gratitude to CPR Indie 102.3 and Programming Assistant Bruce Trujillo for hosting The Rad Trads at their studios in Centennial for this interview.

That's me in 1984...Doing the same thing I enjoy most today...Listening to Music. From childhood, I was exposed to South Texas honky-tonks, my great-grand mother's Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records, and the ever-vibrant, Live Music scene of Austin. I love most all music and don't care much for how people want to "classify" it. For me, Music has ALWAYS been dangerous, provocative, and the most powerful healing force on Earth. I love Jazz because it's complex, defiant, and improvisational. I love most Roots music for it's purity and soul (and that's Reggae, Folk, R&B, Rock...whatever you wanna call it). I love Hip-Hop for it's unique cultural language that is infused into it's Jazz & R&B roots. (Even Louis Armstrong was a rapper). What I dislike is music marketed to the masses that shortcuts quality and complexity, programmed drumbeats, auto-tuned voices, etc.
Raleigh Burleigh was raised in the historic floodplanes of Satank. The Carbondale Rotary Club sponsored him as a youth ambassador to Chile the year before his graduation from Roaring Fork High School. He studied International Affairs and Journalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder then applied those studies traveling throughout South America the following year. Returning to Carbondale thereafter, Raleigh acquired an internship with KDNK News which led to the opportunity to serve as News Director from 2017 to 2019. After another trip to South America in early 2019, Raleigh Burleigh drew deeper into the confluence as Program Director at KDNK. Raleigh now serves on KDNK's board of directors and as editor of Carbondale's weekly newspaper, The Sopris Sun.
