Local Fun(gi)

Hunting for edible or medicinal fungi is growing increasingly popular. But without the proper tools and training, this hobby can be extremely dangerous. Our first clip, is from when KDNK’s Hattison Rensberry went on a mushroom hunt with Hamilton Pevic a local mushroom enthusiast and owner of Hamilton’s Mushrooms.

As well as finding those delicious berries, Hamilton introduced the crew to quite a few locally available mushroom varieties. The upcoming Beyul Mushroom retreat up the Frying Pan is set to educate attendees through instructional seminars and hands-on workshops. Hamilton is a co-organizer of the retreat. The second clip is when reporter Hattison Rensberry called him for an in-depth run-down on the project.

The Beyul Mushroom retreat is August 12th through 15th, with locals-only day tickets still available. Saturday the 13th will feature the most instruction. Tickets are available at BeyulRetreat.com

*** KDNK does not recommend the use of our photos or interview content for identification of edible fungi or foraged foods. We encourage anyone interested in doing so to consult an experienced mushroom hunter and published identification guides. Only eat foraged food if you are absolutely sure you know what it is.

Hattison Rensberry has a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design and Drawing, but has worked for newsrooms in various capacities since 2019.
She also provides Editorial Design for the Sopris Sun.
