Longtime Garfield County Commissioner—and frequent proponent of the oil and gas industry—Tom Jankovsky speaks during a listening session held by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission at the Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs on Thursday, April 13, 2023.

Members of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission set up shop in Glenwood’s Hotel Colorado Thrusday afternoon.

Board members made it clear they were only there to listen to the public, not to debate. Still, they got an earful.

A few dozen folks showed up for the session, and about half signed up to speak.

The majority of public comments mentioned the cumulative impacts of fossil fuel development, and urged COGCC to employ the EPA’s existing framework for considering future effects of extraction.

A stakeholder outreach and public comment period on cumulative impacts wrapped up in late February after four meetings, but a special hearing to give an update on that process will be held on May 2nd at 9 a.m. Officials told KDNK that that session is likely to be virtual only, without an in-person component.
