A man was shot and killed Monday by a Glenwood Springs police officer in an apparent altercation at the Glenwood Meadows shopping center. As of Monday evening, the deceased had not been identified except that he was a white male. According to media reports, two Glenwood Springs police officers on a routine patrol recognized the man, who had an outstanding felony warrant on gun-related charges. As the officers approached the man, he produced a firearm. Officers retreated and one of them opened fire, injuring the man. As the man moved toward his vehicle, the officers engaged him again and fired more shots. The officers held their position until more first responders arrived. 9 News reported that officers found a high-capacity firearm and believe the man could have had more ammunition. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Glenwood Springs Fire. No one else was injured during the incident but according to Facebook posts, shoppers and residents were asked to shelter in place. The officer who fired the fatal shots has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation. This is a developing story. KDNK will have more as it develops.
