Some 150 people turned out in Glenwood Springs on Wednesday to Walk for Justice. Four local congregations came together to support vulnerable and marginalized communities. The demonstration aimed to put the “pro” back in protest by being peacefully pro-women, pro-LBGT, pro-immigrant, pro-Latino and pro-earth.
It began at the Bluebird Cafe, where the community was invited to make signs, contemplate, write laments or confessions on shreds of rainbow cloth, or receive Ash Wednesday markings. At 5:30 they left the cafe and walked nearly a mile up Grand Avenue against commuter traffic. Honking horns and gestures of greeting encouraged the demonstrators. Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian and Episcopal church leaders sponsored the Ash Wednesday Walk for Justice.
Pastor Jeff Carlson of Good Shepherd Lutheran church told the Glenwood Post Independent, “Faith for us means standing with people who are struggling. It’s about justice, mercy, and walking alongside our neighbors instead of standing apart from them.”
