On Saturday, April 6th, the Colorado Broadcasters Association (CBA) held its annual Awards of Excellence Gala to recognize Colorado’s best broadcast work in 2024.

Walter Gallacher and KDNK won the award for Best Public Affairs program for Immigrant stories. A new edition broadcasts monthly, and 4-minute edits of programs from previous years can be heard regularly during the local news segment on weekday evenings.
Walter is a gifted listener and interviewer who draws out the stories of the many different kinds of immigrants who make the mosaic of our communities. Walter would agree that “we are all immigrants.”

KDNK is honored by Walter's dedication to sharing these stories. Walter has been doing a monthly show for the last 18 years. Walter began Immigrant Stories by producing four-minute segments for broadcast during All Things Considered in 2006. Shortly afterwards he was approached by then-News Director Conrad Wilson to produce the half hour show, which started in 2007. Walter has been doing interviews and sharing these community voices ever since.

Over 430 radio and television broadcasters gathered Saturday evening at the Ritz Carlton Denver for cocktails, networking, dinner, and to receive awards for their amazing work. This year, the CBA received 975 entries (533 from radio, 436 from television). One hundred sixty volunteer broadcasters from around the country were assembled into panels to judge all the entries. The CBA also celebrated its 75th anniversary with the announcement of a Colorado Broadcasters Hall of Fame, launched in 2024.
