No Kings Protests planned across the Western Slope this weekend

Close to 300 people from the Roaring Fork and North Fork valleys gathered on Labor Day as part of the national Workers Over Billionaires Day of Protest. The peaceful demonstration at the roundabout on Main Street in Carbondale attracted drivers honking horns, cyclists and Missouri Heights resident Patrick Chase on his vintage motorcycle. The event was organized by Mountain Action Indivisible, which will hold a community meeting on Sept. 10 at the Third Street Center to talk about how to resist authoritarianism.

In June, roughly 5 million people came out for over 2,000 No Kings demonstrations across the country to protest the Trump administration, and everything from ICE to the environment was on the table. The national organization behind these protests is a pro-democracy nonprofit called Indivisible. Indivisible is reporting nearly 3,000 No Kings protests are set to go for this Saturday, including those in Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Paonia, and Eagle County.

The Roaring Fork Valley’s chapter, Mountain Indivisible, will be gathering at Bethel Plaza in Glenwood Springs and marching down Grand Avenue. There will be a speech by Representative Elizabeth Velasco, as well as live music and kids' activities. Local and national leaders remind participants that these are peaceful protests with no room for political violence.
