This is an active bear summer! KDNK's News Director Marilyn Gleason spoke with reporter Katalina Villarreal about the bear ad coordination between Colorado Parks and Wildlife and local governments. This interview preview shares a few of CPW's bear advertising goals. What we need to know!
"So they have the bear-wise tips, and that is on the CPW's website, but a few of them are to secure your trash and recycling and food with locks and indoors," Villarreal said.
"Also, if you feed pets outside, do not leave any pet food outside and lock that up. If you do feed them outside, clean up the remnants right away so those smells don't linger," she continued.
Villarreal also noted that if you're in an active bear area, do not keep bird feed out as it is very nutrient-dense and attracts bears.
"The CPW specified to coordinate communication between neighbors," Villarreal explained. "So, if you're in a neighborhood and you have a bear and it went through one of your neighbor's trash, you want to communicate with them and try to keep everyone up to date with the current information so that people aren't out of the loop and aren't unaware of what to do."
"If there is any incident, call the CPW office if a bear is breaking into trash or cars. But if it's just wandering down the street, you don't have to call them for that," she clarified.
Bears are pretty facile. They can get into your car, so keep those car doors locked and those windows up!
"Yes, the mothers are teaching their bear cubs how to break into vehicles," Villarreal stated.
