Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo yesterday issued an update on the man found dead near the top of McClure Pass on Monday morning. The body was observed by a person driving on a rural road. A deputy and an ambulance from the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District located the man. The cause of his injuries have not been reported. The Pitkin County Coroner's Office has notified next of kin and identified the man as 49 year old Longmont resident Matthew Barz. Highway 133 was closed for several hours Monday so investigators could search the scene. The Gunnison and Pitkin County Sheriff’s Offices are working cooperatively. There is a lot of speculation out there, including one version of the story that suggests the deceased was murdered. But we have no official confirmation on the cause of death.
