Bill Kane Wins Basalt's Mayoral Race, Voters Pick New Faces for Town Council

Unofficial election results for Basalt and Carbondale’s municipal elections are in. KDNK’s Lucas Turner has the details.

The presumptive Mayor-Elect of Basalt is Bill Kane, who received 651 votes or about 57%. Kane has served as Basalt Town Manager, VP of Planning and Development for Aspen Skiing Company, and Planning Director for Aspen and Pitkin County.

Due to a field of more than two candidates this year, Basalt was set to use a ranked-choice voting system, but since Bill Kane received more than 50% of the vote on first count, voter’s second choices did not come into play.

Basalt Mayoral Candidate and Current City Councilor Bill Infante came in second with 271 votes or 23%. Infante is on the Basalt council and his term will end in April 2022. Candidate Rob Leavitt came in third, receiving 219 or 19% percent of votes.

Three town council seats were also up for election in Basalt. The presumptive winners are Glenn Drummond, David Knight, and Elyse Hottel, all new to the council this year. Terms ended for incumbent Jennifer Riffle who came in 4th of 6, and two others whose terms expired but did not run for re-election, Auden Schendler, and Katie Schwoerer.

The final results will be tallied after Wednesday, April 15th when 56 overseas and signature verification ballots are added. Basalt Town Clerk Pam Schilling says the outstanding ballots will not change the results of the Mayoral race but could shift the results of the town council race.
