The Arch Coal-operated West Elk Coal Mine in Somerset, CO. A coalition of environmental advocacy organizations, including Carbondale's Wilderness Workshop, prevailed in a lawsuit against the Polis Administration. A judge ruled that the Colorado Dept. of Public Health and Environment must complete a draft permit for the mile, which has been operating without state oversight since Sept., 2021. The administration also must provide progress updates as they prepare the permit.
