In this episode, host Adrián Victór is on a field assignment in Camuy, Puerto Rico, where regenerative farming innovators Stephanie Syson and Dan Whitney have just founded a 35-acre jungle homestead and an exciting non-profit called the Caribbean Agroforestry Institute (www.caribbeanagroforestry.org), dedicated to the practice and education of island food sovereignty. With the sounds of frogs (known on the island as coquis for their distinctive croaking sound), their dog Tulsi and their sunbeam of a daughter Acacia Wolf playing in the background, we caught up with Stephanie and Dan on a delicious tropical evening to define agroforestry for our listeners and to discuss how this land stewardship practice can yield such a wide palette of tropical plants. They also shared some sage advice about how to select an appropriate site for a permaculture homestead and how the Caribbean Agroforestry Institute teaches people to become self-reliant in such endeavors. You may recognize Stephanie’s voice as a former host of KDNK’s long-running public affairs program Living Permaculture.
