New Fiber Optic Backbone Coming through Glenwood, Rifle and Other Rural Colorado Towns

The Northwest Colorado Council of Governments is spearheading new fiber-optic network dubbed Project Thor. KDNK’s Lucas Turner has more.

The network loop will start in Denver, run west to Rifle, head north towards Meeker into Steamboat Springs, and then go back to Denver. The Denver Post reports the new fiber network will act as a backbone for government partners and private companies to provide high-quality broadband service directly to underserved communities.

So far project Thor has received a 1 million dollar grant from the state Department of Local Affairs for infrastructure and a 270,000 dollar grant to lease cable from CDOT for the first three years. It has also received funding from local government partners.

Officials say the network will provide redundancy for communities that experience regular outages and fill a need for affordable broadband in rural areas.
