KDNK Full-Time News Reporter Job Description
News Reporter - 40 hours/week
The KDNK News Reporter is the full-time, staff reporter and works alongside the News Director. The reporter is responsible for a variety of different beats, creates enterprise stories and takes assignments from the News Director. The reporter also hosts NPR’s All Things Considered and NPR’s Morning Edition as needed. Photography and video skills are a plus. Bilingual a plus but not necessary for hiring.
The KDNK News Reporter tells bigger-picture plus breaking news stories that affect people in the Roaring Fork/Colorado River valleys and the West. Reports can be spots (one-source stories, 2-ways, voicers) or long-form, narrative radio stories, ranging from 3 - 6 minutes.
The full-time reporter is accountable to the KDNK News Director on the managerial level and the Executive Director overall.
Expectations
Strong interest in local news
Confidence in covering a wide variety of beats
Ability to produce solid stories, at times with a fast turn-around
Strong research skills, familiarity with data and web-based research
Knowledge of audio editing software (KDNK uses Adobe Audition) and scriptwriting software (Google Docs).
Coverage of municipal/county government meetings as assigned
1 feature/week, 8 spots/month - more as needed or assigned
Host NPR’s All Things Considered (5 - 6 PM weeknights) at least 3/wk
Host NPR’s Morning Edition (as needed)
Produce/host one public affairs show/month
Post news stories to the KDNK website
Attendance at news staff meeting Mondays 10 AM, Thursday w/News Director
Attendance at KDNK staff meeting Tuesdays 2:30 PM
Ability to prioritize tasks and practice effective time management
Ability to take direction from others and be a self-starter
Ability to communicate questions, comments, concerns effectively
Flexibility to help with station operations when needed or directed.
Salary/Benefits
$42,500 annually
$250/month health stipend
