A Wild Ride: Celebrating 60 Years of the Wilderness Act

A Wild Ride: Celebrating 60 Years of the Wilderness Act

We’d like to invite you to join us for a very special evening to honor the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. The evening is particularly special to Wilderness Workshop, as we were founded three years after the Wilderness Act was passed into law. Our founders – Connie Harvey, Joy Caudill and Dottie Fox – fought early and hard for wild places in our valley. And won! Their efforts culminated in congressional designation for the Hunter-Fryingpan, Collegiate Peaks, West Elks, and Raggeds Wilderness Areas, and doubled the acreage within the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area, which together amounts to nearly a half-million acres of wilderness in the White River National Forest!

And so, to honor the 60th, we are partnering with Alya Howe of Writ Large to host “A Wild Ride,” a live storytelling event at The Arts Campus At Willits (TACAW). Through the voices of our community, these stories will explore different perspectives on and connections to wilderness, as we celebrate, reckon with, and reflect together on the past 60 years of the wilderness movement, while looking forward to the next 60.

All proceeds from the evening will go straight to Wilderness Workshop to fuel our continued work protecting the wilderness, water, and wildlife of Western Colorado’s public lands.
