Jess Kimura faced racism and sexism growing up in British Columbia. She faced the same things as a game-changing snowboarder.

Jess Kimura altered the trajectory of women’s snowboarding with her video part in 2010’s Right Brain, Left Brain. She was working construction jobs when the film was released, and her life changed overnight. Since then she’s won numerous awards, and late last year released the third film in her all-female snowboard series, The Uninvited. Learning to Drown, a documentary following Kimura’s struggles after the death of her partner, won the audience award at Carbondale’s 5Point Film Fest in April. Thursday night, she’ll appear in person for a screening of that documentary as part of 5Point’s Encore Show at TACAW. KDNK’s Morgan Neely spoke with Kimura about her achievements in the face of lifelong obstacles.
