As of June 6th, sixteen water related fatalities have occurred in Colorado this year. Staying safe in lakes involves using life jackets, parks resources, and best judgment. Colorado Parks and Wildlife encourages the use of personal flotation devices when swimming, boating, or engaging in any water sport. Many parks lend out PFDs for free, but it's recommended to check the park’s website before you visit. There are no lifeguards at Colorado State Park beaches so in case of emergency call 911, and alert park staff. Children 12 and under must always be supervised and adults are also encouraged to never swim alone. It is also crucial to swim only in designated areas where staff have identified safest conditions for recreation. Water conditions can change quickly, make sure to check the weather and ask park staff about swimming area closures. Other risk factors include dehydration, heat exhaustion, and sunburn. Preparation and prevention is key to a safe summer.
