Medical emergency, not speed, causes car crash

On Wednesday, January 15th, there was a car accident outside of Rhumba Girl Liquors at approximately 6 p. m. Sergeant Paul Lazo of the Carbondale Police says that two cars were involved, although there is not yet a finalized report of the accident.

"It sounds like it was a heavy pickup truck that was driving southbound on Highway 133.
The driver had some kind of medical issue and lost control of his vehicle and potentially went onto oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle. The driver of the truck was transported to Valley View Hospital probably and the other driver was released."

Commenters on the Facebook page Roaring Fork Road and Weather raised concerns about the 35 mile an hour speed limit on that part of Highway 133. Sergeant Lazo says that speed may be a concern during certain times of day, but cautious driving is the best accident prevention.

"It's so dependent on like the time of day, how many people are out. We're in the middle of winter right now. Weather can really take a big impact."

Besides paying attention to pedestrians and road conditions, new legislation will make driving that much safer.

"The Hands Free law essentially restricts drivers of any age to have a mobile device in their hand while they're driving. Generally speaking, wherever your head is directing, right, if my head is looking to the right, everything else in my body is going to probably start directing that way, including the steering wheel if my hands are on the steering wheel."
