State Oil and Gas Commission to Assess $18.25 Million Fine at Special Hearing Monday

The Colorado Oil and Gas Commission will hold a virtual hearing Monday to assess a more than $18 million fine on oil and gas operator Kerr-McGee in connection with the 2017 explosion in Firestone.

Investigators at the time found that a 1-inch flowline that carried gas from the well had been severed, but had not been disconnected from the wellhead and capped.

This led to an explosion that killed two people and seriously injured another. The operator will answer for several alleged rule violations. COGCC Director Jeff Robbins will also provide an update on the SB-181 rulemaking process.
