UPDATED: Pitkin County Landfill Limiting Access to The Public During COVID-19 Shutdown

UPDATED FRIDAY APRIL 9th at 11:30 am MT

Pitkin County Landfill is closed to the public until further notice. Only essential commercial waste haulers will be allowed access during the COVID-19 shutdown with the following exception: "Residents depositing trash, recycling and compost will be allowed access to the landfill on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between the hours of 11am and 1pm."

During the closure, the landfill will not accept construction waste, hazardous waster electronics, furniture, or non-essential landscaping debris. You can find more information at landfillrules.com

Solid Waste Center Manager Cathy Hall says they were turning away more than 40 private vehicles per day with residents making non-essential trips to the landfill.

These non-essential trips were in violation of the County’s Public Health Order. Hall says the trips put Landfill staff and the community at risk. The only essential businesses allowed at the landfill are commercial trash and recycling haulers.

Garfield County’s South Canyon Landfill closed to non-essential trips earlier this week.
