  Last week, news of escalating tensions with Iran dominated headlines and online discourse. But the day-to-day lives of most remained the same. In the Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valleys, temperatures dropped, snow fell, and traffic lined up in all the usual spots.

 

Meanwhile, Carbondale Resident Sarah Klingelheber stood in front of Centennial Park in Glenwood Springs, protesting. KDNK’s Lucas Turner has more.

Pitkin County

Cathy Hall is the manager of the Pitkin County Landfill. Last Friday she was appointed to the State Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission by Governor Jared Polis. KDNK’s Lucas Turner has more.

  A new study by media and analysis firm Corporate Knights reveals that Colorado's Public Employee Retirement Association (PERA) lost over 1.7 billion in retirement savings since 2009 by continuing to invest in fossil fuels. Climate activists hope the new data could convince PERA's Board of Trustees to take divestment action.

Eagle County's regional public transportation provider ECO Transit is offering free rides tonight. Operations Manager Jeff Wetzel says the rides are available on all Eco Transit routes from midnight until approximately 2 AM.

Today was the third annual Healthy Rivers Youth Water Summit. Students from six local schools met at Third Street Center in Carbondale to share presentations on topics like Health of the Roaring Fork River, Impacts of Snowmaking, Hydro Power, Grey-Water Use and more. Sarah Johnson is the director of the Youth Water Leadership Program, the group that organizes the event. She spoke about what makes this year’s summit stand out.

Colorado Department of Agriculture

The Colorado Department of Agriculture annually publishes the Colorado Food and Agriculture Gift Guide, an online directory about products made in the state. KDNKs Lucas Turner spoke with Colorado Agriculture marketing specialist Wendy White to find out more.

For the last 4 years, a group called Carbondale Homeless Assistance has been making efforts to help the homeless population in the area. Lynn Kirchner started the group and took some time to tell KDNK about their approach.

The Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valleys have a new chamber of commerce seeking to integrate and empower Spanish-speaking residents. KDNK's Raleigh Burleigh met Americas Chamber of Commerce President and Founder Paulina Navas, Executive Director John Lopez and Vicepresident Susana Salamun.

Garfield County

Garfield County Commissioners voted Monday to raise the tobacco purchasing age to 21, joining other counties and municipalities in the state.

  This week US Senators Michael Bennet, Cory Gardner, and 37 other Senators asked the House and Senate Appropriations Committee for increased election security funding ahead of the 2020 election. This action comes after the Colorado County Clerks Association, which represents all 64 counties in the state, sent a letter urging the Senate to increase funding to address ‘critical vulnerabilities’ in election systems.
