We are excited to inaugurate our music workshop series with a Songwriting session led by Jan Garret and JD Martin!
This session will focus on the mechanics of songwriting. Jan & JD will guide participants through exercises designed to build songwriting skills and spark creativity. We hope you’ll join us for their follow-up workshop on July 21, where participants will have the opportunity to share their songs and receive feedback.
Jan Garrett recorded and toured with John Denver and Steve Martin (when he was still doing stand-up) and appeared on the Tonight Show. She joined Dirt Band for their historic 1977 Soviet Tour and was later listed in the Rolling Stone “Who’s Who in Rock & Roll.” Jan’s songs have won multiple awards in the world of positive music, and have been arranged, published and widely distributed by Cypress Music, a Canadian choral music company. JD Martin is an acclaimed songwriter of 5 Number One and 10 Top Ten country and pop hit singles. His songs have been recorded by such luminaries as Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, B.J. Thomas, Peter Cetera, and the Oak Ridge Boys. He has won over 15 ASCAP awards for excellence in songwriting in Nashville and LA. They have taught numerous workshops here in the Roaring Fork Valley and you can read more about them here: https://garrett-martin.com/
This workshop is made possible by funding from the Basalt Public Arts Commission and the Town of Basalt.
Come together in song! All ages welcome, no singing experience needed, we will sing simple songs that can be learned in the moment :-) Free community event!

Born, raised, shaped, and inspired by his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, Andrew Duhon tours performing songs that are as much about recognizing our shared stories as they are about telling his own.
Rounding out the touring trio are two of his most trusted collaborators—Myles Weeks (James Hunter Six, Eric Lindell) on bass and Jim Kolacek (Feufollett) on drums.
Blending the gritty, bluesy, folksy, country sounds of his home with the experience of traversing the country and immersing himself in the broad array of cultures across the American landscape, Andrew’s music creates real connection between former strangers through song. As he puts it, “When a song written by a stranger heals you, even in the smallest way, that’s a connection beyond entertainment.”
Andrew has shared stages with Guster, Blind Pilot, and Amos Lee, among others, and has performed at major festivals across the US including New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Milwaukee Summerfest, Bonnaroo, and Americanafest.
His music has been featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, Jam In The Van, Meat Church, as well as in Glide Magazine, No Depression, and American Songwriter.
