Through our partnership with the Aspen Music Festival and School, we welcome talented students from the festival to perform the repertoire they’ve come to Aspen to refine this summer. This intimate concert offers a rare opportunity to experience these musicians up close and engage with them in a post-concert conversation about their lives and artistry. Performance information will be announced on the day of the concert.

Stevie Lizard played guitar in the Junior Wells Chicago Blues Band from 1994-97,  touring the world and playing on the Grammy-nominated Live at Buddy Guy’s Legends.  His trio plays classic rock and sweet soul, as well as Chicago Blues

Jesse Meade is a singer-songwriter who accompanies himself with his own finger-style, acoustic guitar playing while performing both original material and an array of cover songs. His influences include musicians like Ray Charles, Hank Williams, Fats Domino, Elizabeth Cotten, Otis Redding, Jimmie Rodgers, Louis Armstrong, George & Ira Gershwin, Aretha Franklin, Percy Mayfield, Mississippi John Hurt, Cole Porter, Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline, Duke Ellington, Chuck Willis, and Dinah Washington.

We are excited to inaugurate our music workshop series with a Songwriting session led by Jan Garret and JD Martin!
The July 7 and August 4 sessions will focus on the mechanics of songwriting. Jan & JD will guide participants through exercises designed to build songwriting skills and spark creativity. We hope you’ll join us for their follow-up workshops on July 21 and August 18th, where participants will have the opportunity to share their songs and receive feedback.
Jan Garrett recorded and toured with John Denver and Steve Martin (when he was still doing stand-up) and appeared on the Tonight Show. She joined Dirt Band for their historic 1977 Soviet Tour and was later listed in the Rolling Stone “Who’s Who in Rock & Roll.” Jan’s songs have won multiple awards in the world of positive music, and have been arranged, published and widely distributed by Cypress Music, a Canadian choral music company. JD Martin is an acclaimed songwriter of 5 Number One and 10 Top Ten country and pop hit singles. His songs have been recorded by such luminaries as Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, B.J. Thomas, Peter Cetera, and the Oak Ridge Boys. He has won over 15 ASCAP awards for excellence in songwriting in Nashville and LA. ¡Estamos emocionados de inaugurar nuestra serie de talleres musicales con una sesión de composición musical dirigida por Jan Garret y JD Martin!
Las sesiones del 7 de julio y del 4 de agosto se centrará en los métodos de composición musical. Jan y JD guiarán a las personas participantes a través de ejercicios diseñados para desarrollar aptitudes de composición musical y despertar la creatividad. Esperamos que nos acompañes durante la continuación de estos talleres, el 21 de julio y 18 de agosto, donde las personas participantes tendrán la oportunidad de compartir sus canciones y de recibir comentarios y sugerencias.

When F. Scott Fitzgerald issued his classic conclusion that ‘There are no second acts in American lives,’ he failed to envision the career of legendary Texas troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard. A willing conspirator in the late seventies Cosmic Cowboy revolt that ushered in the mythical Outlaw era, Hubbard was a catalyst in the cultural upheaval that led to the peaceful coexistence of Lone Star music enthusiasts who comprised each end of the social and political spectrum of that troubled time. In the stellar company of iconic colleagues like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Doug Sahm and Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Wylie Hubbard was an architect of the musical legacy that continues to inspire subsequent generations of up-and-coming Texas talent.

Yes, Hubbard is a Texas singer-songwriter, complete with the classic trifurcated handle, fundamental chapter of the canon in his song catalog (“Redneck Mother”), and enough wild hairs in his past to qualify him as a legend. But along the way, his attention began to leave matters extraneous to his art and soul by the wayside and focus on the beauty and potential to be found in the blank canvas of, in his case, the yet to be written and recorded song. The result has been one of the most satisfying musical and lyrical journeys to witness over the last two decades. In the years that followed he evolved into a writer of uncommonly honest portraits of life, alternately mixing deep personal sagas with poignant character studies of those traveling on the dark side of the road.

If one wanted to describe the sound of Ray Wylie Hubbard, one could call it American music, born from the time honored traditions of folk, country, and roots rock.
