The homicide suspect that caused a nearly ten-hour shutdown of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon on Tuesday has been taken into custody. Just after 4 -am Tuesday authorities were told to be on the lookout for 30-year-old Kenny Espinoza of Westminster, who was believed to be traveling near Gypsum and possibly armed. An Eagle County Sheriff’s deputy soon located the vehicle traveling westbound on I-70 at a high rate of speed. The vehicle exited at No Name, and reentered the interstate eastbound, where deputies deployed a spike strip near Dotsero to stop it. Two people then exited the vehicle and pointed a firearm at law enforcement and shots were exchanged. One of those two people suffered minor injuries while attempting to flee and was hospitalized. Five other people were inside the vehicle at the time of the stop, including minor children. Investigators are still determining their relationship to Espinoza. The manhunt for Espinoza caused shelter-in-place orders for local residents, along with the closure of the highway. I-70 reopened after his arrest at around 2 p-m. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry into the shooting, while Westminster Police are handling the homicide case tied to Espinoza.
